It also lines up nicely with some of EA’s other returning sports games. The EA PGA Tour and EA College Football return after a hiatus, sans the pro golfer and NCAA naming rights respectively. The name may sound a bit generic, but it remains in line with the game’s identity. EA pays for the naming and player rights directly to continental leagues like UEFA for the Champion’s League and Europa league, leaving very minor involvement from the organizing body of world soccer.
The challenge lies in if the FC organization would mind losing its headlining place on one of the most popular games in the world. According to the statement by Cam Weber, carrying the ” FC ” name on the box is pennies in comparison to what the company pays to the biggest league and football associations to keep the players and team likeness. FC, on the other hand, stands to lose the synonymity of its name with the premiere soccer video game. The FC branding carries more weight when the FC World Cup games for the men’s and women’s tournament are being held, but that’s a bi-annual release, leaving the remaining off years to be relegated to being just another sticker.
Calling it simply “EA FC” sounds generic, but with the proliferation of the Ultimate Team mode, players that partake are pretty much already on the path of thinking of the game as its own thing rather than a game with loose naming connection to an organization that has very little to do with any development decisions. It’s not hard to understand the idea behind wanting to change the name. The challenge lies in getting the yearly buyers to recognize the game the first few years after the change as the same game they’ve bought in the past.
