With the arrival of the Return of the Ancients update for Path of Exile 2, Grinding Gear Games is introducing one of the most ambitious endgame systems the franchise has ever seen. While the Atlas has always been the heart of progression and replayability in the Path of Exile universe, the new Atlas Masters system dramatically expands how players interact with maps, bosses, loot, and world customization.
Instead of relying solely on passive Atlas trees and league mechanics, players will now gain access to specialized Atlas Masters — powerful endgame mentors who function almost like Ascendancy classes for your Atlas itself. Each Master offers unique gameplay styles, POE 2 Currency, and powerful map-altering bonuses that can completely reshape how players approach the endgame grind.
Whether you enjoy boss farming, strategic map manipulation, or hunting rare unique items, the new Atlas Masters provide a highly customizable experience that allows players to tailor the endgame around their preferred playstyle.
Atlas Masters: Ascendancies for the Endgame
The easiest way to understand the Atlas Masters system is to think of it as a secondary specialization layer for your endgame. Each Master comes with a set of 12 unique abilities that can be toggled on or off at any time. Before entering a map, players can activate up to four abilities, allowing them to customize their Atlas strategy depending on the content they want to run.
This flexibility is one of the most exciting aspects of the system. Rather than committing permanently to a single progression path, players can swap between Masters and loadouts whenever they want. Running difficult pinnacle bosses? Switch to Hilda. Searching for valuable relics and unique items? Bring Jado. Trying to optimize Atlas traversal and biome targeting? Doryani becomes the perfect choice.
This creates a dynamic endgame ecosystem where preparation and planning matter just as much as character power.
Hilda: The Ultimate Boss Hunter
The first Atlas Master players encounter is Hilda, located in a camp southwest of the player’s starting position on the endgame Atlas. Hilda specializes in one thing above all else: hunting powerful bosses and turning difficult encounters into massive rewards.
Her progression revolves around tracking dangerous unique beasts across Wraeclast. After meeting her, she directs players toward specific maps containing boss targets. Defeating these enemies unlocks additional rows of abilities tied to her mastery tree.
For players who love boss farming, Hilda may immediately become the most appealing Master in the entire system.
One of her standout abilities allows players to “cut open” Pinnacle Bosses after defeating them, creating an additional chance for unique item drops. In a loot-driven game like Path of Exile 2, this kind of mechanic has enormous implications for farming efficiency and long-term economy strategies.
But Hilda’s power goes much deeper than simple drop rate bonuses.
She heavily interacts with Azmerian Wisps, one of the more dangerous Atlas-enhancing mechanics. Normally, Wisps can possess rare monsters throughout a map, spreading their power somewhat randomly. Hilda changes this entirely by forcing the Wisps to focus exclusively on unique bosses.
This creates a fascinating risk-versus-reward scenario. Bosses become significantly more dangerous due to concentrated Wisp empowerment, but their rewards scale accordingly. The mechanic essentially allows players to funnel all difficulty into the final encounter for a much larger payout.
Things become even more extreme when her other abilities are combined together.
One node causes Unique monsters to release Wisps upon death, further escalating boss encounters. Another adds a second Unique Boss to maps, effectively doubling potential rewards. Yet another increases the power and loot potential of bosses that have already been modified by additional mechanics.
When these abilities are layered together, Hilda transforms ordinary maps into high-stakes boss gauntlets capable of generating enormous rewards for skilled players.
This specialization is likely to attract dedicated endgame farmers, particularly those targeting pinnacle boss uniques, high-value crafting materials, and chase drops.
Doryani: Master of Atlas Manipulation
While Hilda focuses on combat and boss rewards, Doryani takes a far more strategic approach to the Atlas itself. Players first encounter him near a Corruption Nexus southeast of the starting Atlas location, where he requests assistance cleansing dangerous corruption spreading through the world.
Doryani’s abilities revolve around terraforming, mobility, biome manipulation, and experimental Atlas mechanics. His toolkit feels designed for players who enjoy planning efficient farming routes and maximizing Atlas optimization.
Perhaps his most revolutionary feature is the ability to terraform Atlas biomes after completing maps. This allows players to convert one biome type into another, fundamentally changing the content available in surrounding regions.
This mechanic synergizes heavily with the regular Atlas passive tree. Since certain passives enhance specific biome content, terraforming allows players to shape the Atlas toward their preferred farming strategies.
For example, if a player wants to focus on a biome associated with specific league mechanics, crafting opportunities, or loot tables, Doryani allows them to effectively engineer the Atlas to support that goal.
This level of environmental control could become one of the most powerful economic tools in the game.
Doryani also excels at improving Atlas traversal. One of his abilities unlocks new precursor laylines after completing maps, enabling players to skip ahead rapidly through the Atlas.
For players hunting Citadels or attempting to optimize progression speed, this mechanic could dramatically reduce travel inefficiencies and accelerate endgame advancement.
However, some of Doryani’s most interesting mechanics come from his experimental “science” systems.
One standout ability called Strongbox Constructions completely changes how Strongboxes function. Instead of opening them normally, players can destroy Strongboxes and combine their modifiers into a powerful rare construct enemy.
Every modifier attached to the Strongbox becomes a trait on the construct itself.
This creates an entirely new crafting mini-game inside the Atlas. Players can intentionally roll Strongboxes with dangerous or rewarding modifiers, then convert them into highly customized rare monsters with potentially massive loot potential.
It’s a brilliant risk-and-reward mechanic that encourages experimentation and strategic preparation.
Doryani also offers several practical bonuses that make Atlas progression smoother overall. Some nodes grant additional revives during maps, improving survivability for difficult encounters. Others make maps Irradiated by default, increasing their level and improving overall rewards.
Altogether, Doryani feels like the Master built for efficiency-focused players — the type of player who enjoys squeezing maximum value out of every map through optimization and careful planning.
Jado: The Collector of Rare Treasures
The third revealed Atlas Master is Jado, a member of the mysterious Order of the Djinn. Players first encounter him after opening an Ancient Vaal Vault north of the starting Atlas region.
Jado specializes in one thing above all else: unique items.
Everything about his toolkit revolves around discovering, protecting, and amplifying rare artifacts scattered across Wraeclast. For loot hunters and collectors, Jado may quickly become the most addictive Master available.
His abilities significantly increase the appearance rate of unique items, unique Strongboxes, and rare Atlas encounters. He also introduces access to unusual content such as anomaly maps and exclusive loot-focused mechanics.
One of the most exciting additions tied to Jado is a brand-new unique Strongbox that can drop Reliquary Keys. These keys can then be used to obtain even more rare and valuable unique items.
In classic Path of Exile fashion, this creates a layered loot ecosystem where one reward source feeds directly into another.
Jado’s design seems heavily targeted toward players chasing high-end itemization and ultra-rare collectibles. Given how important unique items traditionally are in Path of Exile builds, his mechanics could become central to both solo farming and trade economy strategies.
More importantly, Jado’s existence ensures that Atlas specialization is not purely about combat difficulty. Instead, players can choose an identity based on what they enjoy most — bossing, optimization, or treasure hunting.
A Flexible and Player-Friendly System
One of the smartest aspects of the Atlas Masters system is how flexible it is.
Grinding Gear Games clearly understands that Path of Exile players enjoy experimenting with different strategies. Locking players permanently into one Master would have created frustration and discouraged creativity.
Instead, players can quickly swap Masters before each map using a simple interface located on the left side of the screen. While players can customize detailed loadouts manually, most will likely switch Masters depending on the specific map or farming goal they are pursuing.
This flexibility encourages experimentation and keeps the endgame fresh over long play sessions.
For example, a player could use Doryani to rapidly traverse the Atlas and shape biomes, then switch to Hilda for boss farming once the ideal map setup is complete. Afterwards, they might transition to Jado to maximize unique item drops during targeted farming sessions.
The system feels modular, adaptable, and highly replayable — three qualities essential for a successful Path of Exile endgame.
The Future of POE2’s Endgame
The Atlas Masters system represents a major evolution for Path of Exile 2. Rather than simply adding more maps or harder bosses, Grinding Gear Games is fundamentally changing how players interact with the endgame itself.
Each Master introduces not only new mechanics, but entirely new philosophies of progression.
Hilda transforms maps into dangerous boss arenas filled with amplified rewards. Doryani turns the Atlas into a strategic sandbox for optimization and experimentation. Jado converts the endgame into a treasure hunt for the rarest items in Wraeclast.
Together, they create an Atlas that feels more alive, more customizable, and more personal than ever before.
Most importantly, the system appears designed to support long-term replayability. Because players can constantly swap strategies and combine different Master abilities, the endgame is unlikely to feel repetitive anytime soon buy POE 2 Exalted Orbs.
For a game built around endless grinding, build experimentation, and loot chasing, that kind of variety is invaluable.
The Return of the Ancients update launching on May 29 could end up being one of the most important milestones in Path of Exile 2’s development so far. If the Atlas Masters system delivers on its promise, players may soon experience the deepest and most rewarding version of the Atlas the franchise has ever offered.
And for veterans returning to Wraeclast, that may be the most exciting part of all.
