The Nemesis System in Last Epoch is a dynamic random encounter mechanic introduced in Patch 1.1 “Harbingers of Ruin” that offers players a unique way to acquire powerful loot through challenging miniboss fights. Nemeses appear as floating piles of armor around slain warriors and are marked on the minimap with an orange icon, signaling an opportunity for players to interact with them in Campaign, Monolith, and Dungeon maps.
How Nemesis Works
When you interact with a Nemesis, you are presented with a choice of four items, which are always Rare, Exalted, or Unique. For characters above level 50, at least one Unique item is guaranteed. The Nemesis’ type and stats scale with the zone, while the loot scales with your character level.
You have three options when interacting with a Nemesis:
1. Banish: You forgo the current set of items, causing the next Nemesis you encounter to offer a completely new set of four items.
2. Challenge: You fight the Nemesis miniboss immediately. Defeating it rewards you with the four items shown as well as crafting materials.
3. Empower: You fight the Nemesis, but upon defeating it, the Nemesis escapes instead of dropping loot. This causes the same Nemesis to return in your next encounter with upgraded items. You can empower a Nemesis up to two times before you must either challenge or banish it.
Empowering and Loot Upgrades
Empowering a Nemesis enhances the quality of the offered items. Rare and Exalted items can have their affixes increased up to Tier 7, improved Forging Potential, or gain Sealed Affixes. Unique items can gain Legendary Potential or even become Legendary items. This system allows players to upgrade gear progressively by repeatedly empowering and then challenging Nemeses.
Special Items and Mechanics
High-level Nemeses may offer special “Vengeful” weapons, which upgrade to “Avenged” versions with improved stats after killing a Harbinger while equipped with them. Another rare reward is the “Egg of the Forgotten,” which can be replaced by one of your own Unique items to empower it, or it becomes a random Unique if left as is.
Multiplayer Interaction
In multiplayer, each player can interact with the Nemesis individually, maintaining their own Empowerment progress. The Nemesis remains active after defeat, allowing all party members to engage with it separately, though the fight itself is shared.
