We’re not planning to offer an expansion every year as we’re never going to be able to deliver it. What we’ve learned is that it’s impossible to create an effective WoW expansion in this time frame. It’s not worth the risk of sacrificing patches to make it happen, especially if it’s not good quality. I think our focus is to do the right best for our players and making sure that , if you’re a member of a WoW subscription, you will have fresh content available just around the corner to look forward to most times. It’s a steady flow of content playing out the stories in the worlds that we’re building with our expansions and then when it’s time to move to the next expansion. If it’s a brand new setting, a new villain, a new cast of characters, and new settings it’s all good. Doing it all at once doesn’t always benefit anyone.
In retrospect , there’s plenty more we could’ve done with Warlords of Draenor in regards to stories we didn’t get to. We started off with subplots and other villains that weren’t fully resolved. We explored the problems of the Draenei, Shattrath City, which is located in the middle of Draenor, and then really continued to the last issue in the story of the villain. We left that question unanswered. We’re trying not to do that in Legion. It’s all about striking a balance. There are a lot of stories, fleshing out the world as well as generating information. Then when an expansion of the game is completed and the people are ready for it, the focus shifts to that.
The other balance you have to keep in mind is the players who are at max level and fully engaged in the new content when it is released and those who play casually, and coming at it in their own time. What is your approach to that?
It’s challenging because, as the truism says, you can’t please everybody at all times. However, it is our job trying to do that. It’s through the sheer variety and diversity of ways of playing and the way we approach the game. I believe that in Legion we tried our best to accommodate the most diverse range of play styles, starting with the kid who has plenty of time on their hands and is determined for the most successful in the world at raiding, also known as arena, to someone who is a lot more relaxed and prefers the solitude of gaming, questing and exploring.
