Starting a Monk in Path of Exile 2 isn’t quite the clean martial-arts fantasy people expect at level one. You can do it the stubborn way, sure, but you’ll feel every weak hit and every awkward pack. Explosive Grenade is popular because it does the boring work well. It clears groups, chunks rares, and doesn’t ask much from your gear. Contagion is handy when you want debuffs spreading through a messy fight, while Frost Bomb helps against chunkier enemies that refuse to fall over. Some players use Glacial Cascade or Lightning Arrow for safer spacing, and that’s fine. The point is simple: use whatever keeps you ahead of the curve until the real switch happens.
Hollow Palm changes the whole build
Level 22 is the moment the Monk starts to feel like its own thing. Hollow Palm Technique asks you to put the weapon away and fight bare-handed, but it doesn’t mean you’re giving up power. It treats your attacks like Quarterstaff attacks, then scales in a way that feels strange at first. You care less about weapon damage and more about armour stats. Evasion gives attack speed, with 1 percent for every 75 Evasion. Energy Shield pushes your critical chance, giving 0.1 percent for every 10 Energy Shield. So yes, those clunky early armour pieces need to go. Once Act 2 opens up, start looking for Evasion and Energy Shield hybrid bases.
Storm Wave carries the middle stretch
After the Hollow Palm swap, Storm Wave becomes the comfortable clear skill for a lot of players. It hits hard enough, reaches well enough, and doesn’t make every pack feel like a chore. Around level 41, you can start making a more personal choice. Whirling Assault feels great if you like staying active and cutting through packs. Shattering Palm suits players who prefer burst windows and cleaner single-target setups. On the passive tree, don’t skip the obvious power. Concussive Attack and Tenfold Attacks are the sort of nodes that make the build stop feeling patched together and start feeling planned.
Boss damage comes from clean hands
The fancy part is the boss rotation, and it’s where good Monk players separate themselves. People call it Wyvern Tech, but it’s not just showing off. You set up with Wing Blast, use Rend to consume your charges, then cash in on that big damage window. The neat bit is cancelling the slow recovery with a grenade so you’re not standing there like a training dummy. It takes practice, and you’ll mess it up at first. That’s normal.
